Levens 100 Years Ago - Exhibition 2011
In 2010 the LLHG Committee realised that the public availability of the 1911 census, when allied to information from the 1910 Land Tax returns gave an opportunity for a centenary exhibition about the village and parish. The 1911 census published linked with the 1910 Land Tax returns, photographs, and other documentary evidence and personal information, could be used to produce a detailed social record of the people and development of our parish and its surrounding area. We had an existing archive of photographs and information about the school, church, chapel and infrastructures, and by adding the formal census and tax information thought we should be able to give an accurate description of village life at that time, setting it in a national context. We would have to obtain and transcribe the Census and Land Tax document, research the local newspapers, consider the wider historical context and look for illustrations, and to produce maps, diagrams and display boards for the exhibition which was pencilled-in for November 2011.
The Committee appealed to the LLHG membership for volunteers to assist with the transcribing and the research and was gratified by the response.
The Exhibition was at the Levens Institute on the weekend 19/20 November 2011.
Displays showed what life was like in Levens in 1911, with a background of National and world events.

The event attracted a good turn-out. Over 230 signed the visitors book and there were a good few who didn't. Comments made by visitors at the time, and since, show that they enjoyed the exhibition and appreciated the Group's efforts
